ABSTRACT Sorghum is a crop that stands out as an alternative to corn due to lower soil fertility demand and increased tolerance to drought. Lack of information about the qualitative behaviour of sorghum hinders the recommendation of different purpose sorghum cultivars. The goal was to evaluate the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of different purpose sorghum cultivar silages, at two cropping seasons. The trial was conducted at the Plant Production Department, Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rondônia, Colorado do Oeste campus, and chemical analyses and in vitro incubation were performed at the Laboratory of Animal Nutrition, Federal University of Mato Grosso, Cuiabá campus. The experimental design was a randomized... |

Caatinga is the most important biome for the livestock in the Brazilian semi-arid region. This review paper aimed to present information on different forage aspects of caatinga vegetation for ruminant feeding. Caatinga vegetation is formed mainly by shrubs and small trees, usually presenting thorns, deciduous leaves, and leaf abscission occurring frequently at the onset of the dry season. Additional components of the botanical composition in this biome includes the families cactaceae, bromeliaceae, and a herbaceous component formed by grasses, legumes, and forbs, often presenting annual cycle. Quantitative information of caatinga vegetation is scarce in the literature, mainly for the herbaceous stratum. Methodological aspects such as lack of... |

Abstract Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) is a crop of globally importance on whose production around 20 million people depend directly. The crop is threatened due to the incidence of diseases caused by phytopathogenic fungi such as Moniliophthora roreri, causing losses of more than 80 % of the annual production. For this reason, in this study, a natural product such as the essential oil (EO) obtained from Siparuna guianensis was evaluated as a control alternative. The chemical composition of the EO, as well as the antifungal effect in vitro and in vivo on M. roreri, the causal agent of moniliasis frosty pod rot, were determined in the cacao pods located in a commercial plantation in southern Huila, Colombia. 28 compounds were detected, predominating:... |

Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate the repeatability (r) and the number of samples required to measure the nutritional value of four warm-season forage grasses growing in a semiarid region. The grasses evaluated were Urochloa mosambicensis, Cenchrus ciliaris, Digitaria pentzii, and Megathyrsus maximus. Evaluations occurred under two forage management conditions: stockpiling and grazing. Hand-plucked forage samples were analyzed for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), lignin, and in vitro DM digestibility (IVDMD). Four methods were used to estimate r and the number of samples required: analysis of variance, method of principal components based on the covariance (PCCOV) and the... |

ABSTRACT: This work presents theory and applications in capillary electrophoresis. This technique is a powerful tool representing a large saving in chemicals (0.5 to 4 nL s-1 flux), samples (1 to 100 nL), and method development time. In addition, this work pictures applications such as separation and determination of analytical compounds. Recent reviews were cited to provide essential information for users regarding data sources, pioneer works, and theoretical treatments. The technique is reliable to study air, soil, and water samples in order to be able to determine trace amounts of pollutants. Examples of trace elements, pesticides, and humic substances analyses were showed. Separation and determination of proteins, peptides, aminoacids, nucleic acids,... |

ABSTRACT The large scale of mango production allows for the application of immediate technologies to minimize post-harvest losses and add even more value to the fruit chain. As a consequence of feasible applications, the production of alcoholic beverages through fermentation and distillation has been elaborated, resulting in a supply of products with different characteristics. This study aimed to monitor the development of a distilled mango beverage and its profile for consumption. The mangoes were selected, pulped and subjected to physicochemical characterization and, subsequently, to fermentation and distillation processes where the kinetics were monitored, and the beverage obtained was compared to similar products found in the literature. During column... |

The objective of this study was to characterize the nutritional value of forage legumes Mimosa caesalpiniifolia (Benth.), Bauhinia cheilantha (Bong.) and Leucaena leucocephala (Lan.) and evaluate the anatomy of plants incubated and not incubated in the rumen. The experiment was conducted from September 2007 to November 2008. The experimental plot consisted of three useful plants, totaling three plots per block, and four repetitions. Plants were cut at 1 m height at intervals of 70 days; samples of leaf plus stem with a diameter smaller than 4 mm were collected for determination of dry matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, insoluble protein bound to acid detergent fiber and in vitro dry matter digestibility. The anatomical... |

This study aimed at investigating factors that contribute to changes in the quality of corn used in compound poultry feeds. Samples were collected from 6488 bulk cargos received at a feed mill located close to Brasília, Brazil. The parameters studied were divided into two groups: those related to corn chemical composition, including crude protein (% CP), ether extract (% EE), crude fiber (% CF), nitrogen-free extract (% NFE), and estimated metabolizable energy (ME), and corn physical characteristics, including density, moisture, and grain physical damage. High coefficients of determination (R²) and low coefficients of variation (CV) were determined for the chemical and physical parameters. The analysis of variance showed low to medium R². Month, year,... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed to characterize the volatile composition and sensory characteristics of virgin olive oils (VOOs) from eight olive cultivars grown in the southeast region of Brazil. The volatiles were extracted by Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME) and analyzed by Gas Chromatography coupled to MassSpectrometry (GC-MS). The dominant sensory attributes were determined by Temporal Dominance of Sensations (TDS). C5 and C6 alcohols and C6 aldehydes were the most abundant volatiles in the investigated VOOs. E-2-hexenal was among the majorityof volatiles in all investigated olive oils, mainly in VOOs fromcultivars Arbequina, Arbosana and Grappolo 541, in which it had the most of their chromatographic area (about 60-80%). VOOs from cultivars Maria da Fé,... |
